How are silver skin onions grown?
Silver skins are vulnerable products of mother nature and growing
them requires many skills and lots of experience. Silver skins are
sown in the months of April and May, preferably in fertile, well-drained
soil. Just 100 days after the first green shoots emerge, the onions
are harvested in the months of July and August.
When harvested, the onions are immediately transported to the processing
plant. That is where the onions are washed, inspected and split
in 4 size categories. They are machine-peeled and calibrated.
Finally,
the onions may be preserved in a vinegar solution.
However, most
of them are shipped dry and fresh either to pickling companies,
where they are packed in jars, or to freezing companies, where
they are
frozen and may be mixed with other vegetables for the catering industry. |
